I choose the road less traveled

« on: August 11, 2008, 04:29:11 pm »

I had the check engine light come on the other day. I scanned it and came up with a P0420 code. I see the explaination as being "insufficant catalyst". Anybody else experience this yet? What was the cause and cure?

I have looked here  http://www.parksoffroad.com/tacomamods/maintitems/enginecode/dtcc.pdf and can rule out an exhaust leak.

This could be a couple of things 1.one of the O2 sensor(s) could be going out 2.The cat is getting clogged up(my choice) 3.combination of 1. and 2.

As seen in Off-Road Magazine

3 CAT scans an MRI and some time with the shrink. It's confirmed. I'm just not right in the head.

doug, it means the cats are not working like they should, i had the same code on my 04 and the dealer warranty'd them, i think its 8-80 or more on the cats. otherwise its not hurting anything to drive it.

Ya I debated just driving it since the consensus seems to be the cat. All the idling I do at the track may just burn up another ne too so I'm not sure if I should fix it or wait. Maybe I should hope somebody steals it and let insurance buy me a new one.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. Actually figured it out. We had a little trouble getting the front O2S off and must have damage it. Changed that and life is good.
