Sadly, I don't see many obstacles I wouldn't try with my wife's Yaris. It seems the sole purpose of the event is to give the bug to pavement drivers, or to teach them that their 4x4's can do a lil' more than drive on gravel roads.

True but, I've seen plenty of guys with 4 wheel drive Toyotas who have no idea of what their trucks will do. I think the point is, as you said, to "give the bug to pavement drivers". That in itself is a worthy goal. It would be tough to build something most of US would find entertaining and still be completely safe.
