"Toyota has announced that it is launching a 'customer support program' to extend rust perforation warranty coverage on certain 1995 through 2000 model-year Tacoma truck frames. The extended coverage is good for 'a period of 15 years from original sale, with no mileage limitations, for corrosion damage resulting in perforation of the frame material,' the automaker said in a statement.
Toyota noted that there have been 'isolated" complaints about the problem, largely in cold-weather states that use road salt. Customers are asked to take Tacomas to a Toyota dealer for an inspection. 'Upon confirmation of rust perforation, Toyota will, at its option, repair or repurchase the vehicle,' the company said.
Toyota took pains to point out that this is not a recall, but rather, 'goodwill assistance.' Customers can contact the company at (800) 331-4331.
What this means to you: Toyota doesn't want any rust problems to tarnish its image as a premier truckmaker."
