If someone ever hit me I wouldn't hesitate to call the cops and get a police report. In your situation its tough because it looked like everything was ok.  I wouldn't trade info because the other person could always deny hitting you after he/she leaves the scene and then your S@#$ out of luck.  Not to mention if they are a real prick they could call later on and tell the police that you left the scene and then your really screwed.  I know most people are trustworthy but you never know when your gonna get one that isn't and I don't want to take my chances.
