This is a pretty general question that I've been curious about for a couple of days. . .is it necessary (or even just beneficial) to upgrade the transfer case in an '05+ Tacoma when used for desert running?

I know that all the rock crawlers and the guys that see some pretty heavy duty mud always upgrade the transfer case to allow them to utilize a much lower gearing (I've picked up that the Atlas II and the new Atlas 4SP are the crem de la crem), but since I don't have experience with the desert I don't know how necessary or beneficial such an upgrade in the desert would be. Is it ever necessary to have much lower gearing out in the desert? I've always gotten the impression that you're always at pretty high speeds out in the desert. . .but that could just be due to the fact that the only type of that stuff I've seen is the CORR trucks and the Baja racing.
